Traveling to Thailand without a fixed return flight? Then you may well face the uncomfortable question: “When will you be leaving the country?” The onward ticket is the official answer to that.
What Is an Onward Ticket?
An onward ticket — also called an exit ticket or onward travel document — is proof that you will be leaving Thailand. This can be a return flight, a connecting flight to a third country, a bus ticket to Malaysia, or a ferry booking to Singapore. The key point: the document shows that you intend to leave the country within the permitted stay period.
Thailand wants to ensure that visitors do not remain in the country permanently. Airlines also have their own interest in this: they are liable for return transport if a passenger is refused entry at the destination. Many therefore check already at check-in.
Situations Where It Is Required
- Entry without a visa (Visa Exempt): German citizens can enter visa-free for up to 60 days. In theory, proof of onward travel is mandatory — in practice it is not always checked, but at Bangkok airport this is becoming increasingly common.
- Tourist Visa (TR): Even with a tourist visa obtained in advance, consulates and border officials may request an onward ticket — especially for repeated entries.
- Entry via land borders: At land borders — such as from Malaysia or Cambodia — checks are often stricter, as so-called visa runs are well known there.
- Frequent re-entries: Anyone who has already entered multiple times without a clear return ticket is more likely to be checked and asked for an exit document.
Your Three Options
- Buy a real return ticket: The safest option. If you already know when you are traveling back, book directly. Tip: many airlines and booking platforms offer freely cancellable fares — keeping your flexibility intact.
- Use an onward ticket service: The service from Onward Ticket issues a time-limited, real booking confirmation for $16. The ticket is booked on their website and is genuine, but is cancelled after a short period. You book it shortly before entry. Legally this sits in a gray area, but it is accepted by airlines. It is a pragmatic solution, as long as you are aware of its limitations.
- Book actual onward travel: If you are already planning to leave Thailand toward Malaysia, Singapore, or Cambodia, you can simply use that onward journey as your proof. Book your onward travel in advance with 12Go — by ferry, bus, or flight.
Our Recommendation
If you are traveling flexibly and do not yet have a fixed plan, an onward ticket service is a solid choice. For $16 you get a short-notice, genuine booking confirmation that is accepted at check-in and border control. Well-known providers include Onward Ticket. Alternatively, a flexibly cancellable return ticket is worth considering — it gives you the same proof with greater planning security.
Note: Thailand’s entry requirements can change. Check current regulations before your trip on the website of the Royal Thai Embassy or your country’s foreign ministry. This article is for general information purposes and does not constitute legal advice.
